How to Resign Gracefully

Tell your manager face-to-face (or on a call) before the letter arrives — the letter formalizes the conversation, it does not replace it
Keep it short and neutral: your reason for leaving does not belong in the letter
Give the letter to your manager and HR, and keep a copy for yourself
Stay fully engaged through your last day — your final two weeks are what references remember
Offer to document your work and train your replacement
Never vent in writing, no matter how justified — the letter outlives the feelings

Two Weeks Notice FAQ

Is two weeks notice legally required?

In the US, generally no — most employment is at-will, so two weeks is a professional courtesy, not a legal duty. Check your contract or handbook though: some agreements specify a notice period, and some employers tie unused-PTO payout to giving proper notice.

What should a two weeks notice letter include?

Only four things: a statement that you are resigning, your position, your last working day, and a professional close — optionally with a line of thanks and an offer to help the transition. Everything else (reasons, feedback, grievances) belongs in a conversation or exit interview, not the letter.

Should I say why I am leaving?

No. The letter is a formal record, and reasons add risk with zero benefit. "Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation" is complete on its own. Save honest feedback for the exit interview if you choose to give it.

What if my employer asks me to leave immediately?

It happens, especially in roles with system access. It does not change what your letter should say — give the standard two weeks in writing; how the employer handles the period is their call. This is also why you should have personal files and contact details saved before you hand in notice.
