4 Rules for a Strong Reference List

Ask before you list anyone

Always confirm with a reference before submitting their contact info — an unexpected call from a recruiter is the fastest way to burn a relationship you'll need again.

Pick relevance over seniority

A former manager who can speak to your actual day-to-day work beats a impressive title who barely knew you. Recruiters ask specific questions — pick people with specific answers.

Three is the standard

Most employers ask for two to three references. Have a fourth in reserve for roles that ask for more, but don't pad the list — quality of testimony matters more than count.

Keep it a separate document

Don't put references directly on your resume — "References available upon request" is an outdated phrase best cut entirely. Send a matching, separate reference sheet only when asked.

Reference List FAQ

Should I put references on my resume?

No. A separate reference sheet, sent only when specifically requested, is standard practice. Including references — or even the line "references available upon request" — on the resume itself wastes space recruiters could spend on your qualifications.

How many references should I include?

Two to three is standard for most roles; some senior or academic positions ask for more. Choose people who can speak concretely to your work, not just the most senior name you know.

Who makes a good reference?

A former manager or senior colleague who supervised or closely collaborated with you, ideally in a role relevant to the job you're applying for. Personal references (friends, family) are rarely appropriate for professional applications.

Do I need to ask permission before listing someone?

Yes, always. Reach out before submitting an application that lists them, confirm they're comfortable being contacted, and give them a heads-up about the role so their answer is prepared and consistent with your application.
