Software Engineer Resume Example

A software engineer's resume is judged twice: once by an ATS keyword match against the job description's stack, and once by an engineer or hiring manager scanning for evidence of real ownership — not just familiarity with a technology, but what you built with it and at what scale.

The winning format is a single-column layout with a Skills section positioned high on the page, categorized by language, framework, and infrastructure so both the parser and the human reviewer can confirm stack fit in seconds. Everything below that should read as outcomes, not job descriptions.

Recommended Format

Single-column, reverse-chronological, with a categorized skills block near the top and a dedicated Projects section if your job history is thin on shipped work.

Key Resume Points

  • List programming languages and frameworks in a dedicated Skills section, categorized
  • Quantify scale: users served, latency reduced, uptime maintained, requests per second
  • Include GitHub, portfolio, or notable open-source contributions with links
  • Use action verbs: Built, Designed, Optimized, Migrated, Deployed
  • Mention CI/CD, testing practices, and code review or mentorship experience

Sample Software Engineer Resume Bullet Points

Adapt these to your own numbers and context — the pattern that matters is verb, specific action, and a measurable result, not the exact wording.

  • "Rebuilt checkout service in Node.js and TypeScript, cutting p95 latency from 800ms to 140ms and reducing cart-abandonment errors by 22%
  • "Led migration of a monolith to 6 microservices on AWS ECS, reducing deploy time from 40 minutes to 4 and enabling independent team releases
  • "Designed a caching layer with Redis that cut database load by 60% during peak traffic, avoiding a planned infrastructure upgrade
  • "Mentored 3 junior engineers and introduced a code review checklist that reduced production incidents by 30% over two quarters

Common Mistakes

  • Listing every technology ever touched instead of the stack relevant to the target job
  • Describing responsibilities ('responsible for backend development') instead of outcomes
  • Burying GitHub or portfolio links in the body instead of the header where they get seen first

ATS Keywords to Include

React, Node.js, Python, SQL, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, REST APIs, Git, Agile, microservices

Match these against the specific job posting — include the ones that genuinely apply to your background, worded the way the posting words them.

Software Engineer Resume FAQ

Should a software engineer resume include a projects section?

Yes if you're early-career or your side projects are stronger evidence than your job history — bootcamp grads, new grads, and career changers especially. If you have 4+ years of strong employment history, projects can move below experience or be trimmed to 1–2 standout entries.

How technical should the bullet points be?

Specific enough to prove the work happened (name the language, the service, the scale) but framed around the business or system outcome, not just the implementation detail. 'Used Redis' is a fact; 'used Redis to cut database load 60%' is a result.

Is a one-page resume enough for a senior software engineer?

Up to roughly 8–10 years, yes. Past that, two pages is acceptable if every line still earns its place — tracking systems have no length limit, but a hiring manager's attention does.
